As Dutch, British and Scottish communities established themselves in the Hudson Valley, Masonic lodges became part of the civic and social fabric of early Ulster County, helping men build trust, lasting relationships, and stronger communities.

On Sunday, October 4, author and researcher Glenn Kreisberg will present: “Brotherhoods of the New World: Freemasonry, Immigration and the Making of Early America.” The presentation will explore who established Ulster County’s early lodges, the principles that guided them and how they influenced the communities growing around them.

At the center of this local story stands Chancellor Robert R. Livingston, who served as Grand Master of Masons in New York from 1784 to 1801, helped establish its independent statewide jurisdiction, and who administered the presidential oath of office to George Washington on April 30, 1789.
