‘Magical history tour Saturday’

The Rosicrucian Order will follow in the footsteps of its founders Saturday with a walking tour of historic sites central to its creation in 1913. Grand Master Julie Scott will guide the group from Greenwich Village to Harlem to visit four historic places. Don’t worry. The group will ride the subway for the long distance uptown. From the publicity:

We will begin our journey at the Church of the Village (201 W. 13th Street) in Greenwich Village at 1 p.m. Formerly known as the Church of the Open Door, it was here, in 1908, when H. Spencer Lewis had a mystical experience that inspired him to seek out the Rosicrucians. After many tests and trials, he finally met the Rosicrucians of France, in Toulouse in 1909, and agreed to re-establish the Rosicrucian Order in the United States in 1915.

Then we will walk to 80 Fifth Avenue, where, on February 8, 1915, the first meeting marking the formation of AMORC was held.

Next, we will take the subway to see Leslie Hall (260 W. 83rd Street), where eighty curious men and women participated in an informational meeting on March 3, 1915, where fifty people committed to becoming members, after which Lewis and Thor Kiimalehto published American Pronunziamento Number One, announcing the debut of AMORC’s activities.

Our final stop, by subway, will be at the Roerich Museum (319 W. 107th Street) in Harlem. We expect to arrive there at about 3:10. Nicholas Roerich, a prolific writer and painter, philosopher, and peace activist, became a member of AMORC in 1929, the year he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the first time. He was named the legate for AMORC in the Himalayas.

The Roerich Museum displays 150 of his beautiful and inspiring paintings, including the well known Mother of the World.

‘Mysticism and Spirituality series at RCC’

     
Next month, the Rosicrucian Cultural Center in New York City will host a series of nine conversations of ways mysticism and spirituality intersect with art and popular culture. The Center is located at 2303 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard. Each hour-long meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. From the publicity:

Steven A. Armstrong

The facilitator of each meeting, Steven A. Armstrong, M.A. Hum., M.A., M.Div., is a professional historian, philosopher, and teacher based in the San Francisco Bay area. He currently serves at the Grand Lodge in Membership Services. He is an active member of both the Rosicrucian Order and the Traditional Martinist Order, and has served as an officer in both Orders.

His current areas of interest include how the Primordial Tradition permeates all world traditions, and the way in which the Rosicrucian and Martinist paths provide a unique and unifying viewpoint on those traditions. He is the author of more than 30 published papers, articles, and podcasts, and is a lecturer for the RCUI. Steven is no stranger to the greater New York City area, as he was an undergraduate at Yale University, and received two Masters Degrees studying at the Rose Hill Campus of Fordham University in the Bronx.

At each meeting, Armstrong will lead the discussion and provide examples of relevant works, but those in attendance also may bring selections they have used for mystical and spiritual purposes.

(Masonic brethren sometimes ask me what Rosicrucianism is. I’m not up to the task of answering the question conclusively, but I can say two things: 1) Rosicrucianism chiefly is about healing—mending others, but first helping oneself so as to be able to help others. 2) Rosicrucianism differs from Freemasonry in that its organized doings concern only The Work. That is, there are no ritual competitions, hot dog eating contests, kiddie groups, and the endless other frivolities that trivialize Masonic lodges to the verge of irrelevance. You know what I’m talking about.)

A real treat, especially for those of us new to New York Freemasonry and are unaccustomed to knowing Grand Lodge officers who can discuss Freemasonry brilliantly. Saturday, March 11 – New Jersey Lodge of Masonic Research and Education 1786 will host the Magpie Mason! A Past Master of the lodge, I will tender my first presentation to the brethren in a really long time. Titled “Question Everything (And Answer as Best You Can),” I’ll recount the history of Masonic education, and explain how attainable an advancement in Masonic knowledge really is, even for the timid seeker.

Thursday, March 16 – The Mythology Roundtable of New York will meet for Mesopotamian Mythology Class at Brooklyn Brainery at 8:15 p.m. From the publicity:

Mesopotamia, the ancient “Land Between Two Rivers” in present day Iraq, was home to many different gods. Though less-well known today than the pantheons of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, the gods of Mesopotamia had just as many grand adventures, big personalities and poignant observations on the human condition. We know them today thanks to a rich ancient literature, including the famous “Epic of Gilgamesh,” the first example of written epic poetry in world history.

In this class, we’ll meet the most important gods of Mesopotamia: tempestuous Inanna (the original femme fatale), wise Enki, monster-slaying Ninurta, and many more. We’ll hear the story of the great “two-thirds divine” hero Gilgamesh and uncover the original context of familiar names like Ishtar and Lilith. We’ll also learn how these gods were worshipped, and how the worship affected history, up to and including the modern world.

This class is a general introduction to the myths and legends of Mesopotamia. No previous knowledge of the subject matter is required.

Saturday, March 18 – The Rose Circle Research Foundation will bring renowned scholar, author, Freemason, Fama translator, etc. Christopher McIntosh back to the lectern to present “New Light on the Golden Dawn.” From the publicity:

In the founding of the 19th century English occult society the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a key role was played by an alleged German Rosicrucian adept named Fräulein Anna Sprengel, who had the magical motto Sapiens Dominabitur Astris (the wise person overcomes their stars). In this lecture, historian Christopher McIntosh reveals a sensational discovery he made about Fräulein Sprengel, and speaks about its significance for the history of the Golden Dawn.

Wednesday, March 29 – I don’t know what is going on with The American Lodge of Research. It hasn’t published a book in about six years. I haven’t received a mailing in two or three years. The website is gone. The Yahoo! Group is effectively shut down. At Masonic Week a couple of weeks ago, a past officer confided the lodge is basically dead, and yet its Faceypage still hints at activity. A meeting on this evening with RW Pierre de Ravel d’Esclapon, a Fellow of the lodge, presenting “The Vatican and Freemasonry: A History of Misunderstanding?” Eight o’clock in the Jacobean Room in Masonic Hall.

‘Celebrate the solstice’

     
In these parts, the Winter Solstice will arrive Wednesday at 5:44 a.m. It’s hard to find a good solstice celebration anymore, and it’s a shame there isn’t much in Freemasonry for St. John Evangelist Day either. Anthroposophy NYC is preparing its annual Holy Nights programming, but hasn’t announced what that will be. The Rosicrucian Order has plans for this week though. From the publicity:

Each soul confronts the 42 Confessions of Maat. Anubis weighs the heart against the feather of Maat, and Osiris judges. The Rosicrucian mystical perspective of this myth is examined. Question and answer session will be followed by a meditation.

A young man named Lucius becomes fascinated with witchcraft and is transformed into a donkey. Passed from owner to owner, his ordeal exposes him to many trials until the magic spell is broken by the goddess Isis, and Lucius is initiated into her cult. This story of transformation has many mystical implications which are discussed from a Rosicrucian perspective. There will be a discussion period and meditation.


The facilitator of these discussions will be E. Bernard West, who serves the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis as Grand Councilor for Georgia and Louisiana, and the Traditional Martinist Order as Provincial Master in Georgia. He is known for his expertise in Egyptian, Greek, and Roman mythologies. He also serves in various Masonic capacities, including as Master of a Prince Hall Affiliated Blue Lodge, Patron of an Eastern Star Chapter, a Noble of the Mystic Shrine and Grand Inspector General 33º of the United Supreme Council. Bernard has a Master’s Degree in Political Science and a Ph.D. in American Studies, and is a published author and retired Army officer.
